NYWC REACT TO ASUU NATION WIDE STRIKE

PRESS STATEMENT FROM THE OFFICE OF THE NBCD – NIGERIA YOUTH WORLD COUNCIL (NYWC)

Date: July 8, 2024

NYWC EXPRESSES DEEP DISPLEASURE OVER NATIONWIDE STRIKE BY UNIVERSITY LECTURERS

The NIGERIA Youth World Council (NYWC) expresses profound disappointment over the sudden commencement of a nationwide strike by university lecturers beginning today. This action, while perhaps justified by long-standing grievances, once again leaves millions of Nigerian students stranded, disoriented, and uncertain about their future.

As a body committed to the advancement, empowerment, and protection of the interests of Nigerian youth, we are compelled to state unequivocally that this recurring disruption of academic activities is not only unacceptable but deeply damaging to the morale, stability, and productivity of our young population. Over the years, Nigerian students have become victims of unresolved disagreements between the Federal Government and academic unions.

CONSEQUENCES OF INACTION

Each strike action results in:

– Academic stagnation

– Emotional distress

– Reduced competitiveness of Nigerian graduates on the global stage

We strongly urge:

1. The Federal Government and ASUU leadership to return to the negotiation table without delay.

2. Both parties to show utmost sincerity and patriotism in resolving all outstanding issues.

3. Prioritization of the future of Nigeria’s youth above all bureaucratic or political interests.

CALL FOR SOLIDARITY

We call on:

– Civil society organizations

– Student unions

– Concerned stakeholders

to rise in solidarity for a final and lasting resolution to this destructive cycle.

The Nigeria Youth World Council remains committed to advocating for:
